Hong Kong holds a wife-carrying competition
CHAN: Hong Kong had its first wife-carrying championship to celebrate Valintine's Day. Strange as it sounds, this is actually a tradition that dates back to 19th century Finland when bandits stole women from neighboring villages. Let's see how it went over in Hong Kong.
STORY: It was a marriage of sport, fun and romance for the 15 couples who took part in the competition. The lovers -- young and old , hopped onto one another's backs hundreds of people looked on. The men came in everything from superhero outfits to Chinese wedding costumes. They dashed over obstacles
and scooped up roses while their wives held on to them.
The oldest contestants were 70-year old Wong Chi-hung and his 60-year old
wife, who've been married for 36 years.
The winners were Michael and Cora Fung, fittingly dressed as superman and
wonderwoman.
[Cora Fung, competition winner]: "If we have any arguments, the most important thing is to be
understanding, but my husband really supports me."
They said that running around piggy-back, like marriage, had its challenges.
[Michael Fung]: "The most difficult thing was that it was a bit heavy and balancing on
the beam was quite tricky. It was exciting."
Besides winning a trophy, the Fungs took home a pair of airline tickets to
Shanghai.
